PCOS & Facial Hair

September being PCOS Awareness Month, it is really important to us at Sugar Sugar Wax, and also for many of our customers that are affected by the condition to shed light on the reality of living with PCOS.

For those that may not be familiar with the term; PCOS also known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a condition that affects roughly 6%-12% of women according to the CDC. It is also estimated that 70% of women that suffer from PCOS themselves aren’t even aware that they have the condition.

One of the most difficult symptoms of PCOS is the overgrowth of facial hair in women, particularly around the chin area. The hair tends to be coarse, long and it grows much faster than the average rate of hair growth.

PCOS stems from hormonal imbalances, usually the male hormones; androgens, that are present in the body, which affect things like the production of oil, and hair in the skin. The overproduction of oils sometimes leads to acne, which makes the management of the hair growth quite challenging.

Most of the women that suffer from PCOS have a much harder time shaving or waxing the facial hair because of the enhanced sensitivity. That’s where we come in!

Sugaring facial hair is much more gentle than any other method, and the results last much longer. One of our customers wrote:

“After discovering Sugar Sugar Wax and trying it out for the third time, my chin hair has not grown back for like two weeks!!! That breaks my personal record for my hair re-growth time post hair-removing, where my hair grew back [after tweezing or threading] the next day or two or three.”

Helping people with PCOS manage facial and chest hair effectively, gently and safely is one of the reasons that we do what we do.

As we continue to evolve into a more empathetic and connected collective following the effects of last year’s pandemic, a heightened sense of awareness is vital when it comes to conditions that affect the everyday lives of the women around us.

Many of us reluctantly reach for hair removal products 2-3 times a month, never realizing that some of us are so accustomed to this being a weekly, if not daily routine. So let’s open the space for conversation and offer safe, gentle and more effective solutions.
